Passport 2 Pimlico saw 500 residents take to the streets to re-imagine and re-enact the 1949 Ealing Classic ‘Passport to Pimlico’. A three-year series of live performances filmed in public spaces across Pimlico by artist Alexis K Johnson and filmmakers James Johnson and Paul Cowie. Exhibited in Tate Britain and Hyde Park reaching an audience of 15,000. It represented Westminster City Council for their 2009 Cultural Olympiad.
Re-enacting live scenes in public spaces across Pimlico, old and young neighbours came together to co-created their own characters and scripts. They went about finding treasure, barricading streets with passport controls, hosting musical bus tours, tea parties and cockney knees-ups.
Jon Herbert, L&Q Housing Trust Neighbourhood Investment Officer commented, “It has been a great pleasure for myself and L&Q to be a part of this excellent project. To be able to contribute to something that has worked towards bringing generations together in such a creative and imaginative way has been a great experience. Passport 2 Pimlico has been a great success with community involvement.”
Passport 2 Pimlico was supported by L&Q and Groundworks North London Heritage Lottery Fund.
